Heineken Subheading
“I don’t sell beer, I sell enjoyment.”
– Alfred Henry Heineken
For over 140 years, Heineken has been making quality beer that’s enjoyed by people from all across the globe. The recipe for this golden delight was created in 1873 and has been the same ever since! With a history, carved in innovation and creativity, Heineken has stood the test of time with audiences across the world and has many awards and accolades to their name.
In 1875, Heineken won the Medal D’Or at the International Maritime Exhibition and soon after, the Dutch beer company became the largest exporter to France. In 1889 Heineken’s new, pure-tasting pilsner won the prestigious Grand Prix at the Paris Expo and one year later Heineken started supplying the restaurant at the Eiffel Tower. Many awards have followed these, but these milestones still adorn the Heineken product labels.
In the 19th century, Heineken discovered the unique A-Yeast and ever since it’s been the key to Heineken’s iconic taste balance, with subtle fruity notes that people all over the planet fell in love with and the team at Heineken say there will never be a need for Plan B.

Quick Facts
- 25 million Heineken beers are served every day across 192 countries.
- Heineken lager contains three main ingredients: barley, hops and water, but what gives Heineken its signature flavour is the addition of A-Yeast. At the right temperature, Heineken’s unique A-Yeast is added, thus starting the natural process of fermentation. A-Yeast is happiest with a large surface area which is possible in the horizontal fermentation tanks.
- Innovation played a major role in Heineken’s heritage, and the original World Bottle (WOBO) is a great example of their imaginative thinking. Its ground-breaking design allows it to be re-used as a brick for building houses and this could’ve resulted in less litter and efficient up-cycling of materials. It was one of the very first ‘brew a better future’ initiatives, but sadly technical hurdles after the first trial production in 1965, prevented the concept from being implemented.
