About Darren
Darren works at Gullivers Tavern Kununurra with his wife, Angela. His parents Bevan and Bernice own it and have done so since 2007.
What was your first gig in the liquor industry, and what was the path to Barons?
I got into the liquor industry through helping my parents with one thing and another. You do what you can’t get others to do I suppose… Our pathway transitioning to Liquor Barons from another banner was an easy decision. Hands down, the backup support offered and the fact that Barons is WA owned, were great selling points for us. The whole connective concept of the Liquor Baron’s group is brilliant; it works, it’s effective and it produces great results for our business.
Do you support any local clubs/community groups?
We support our local community where we can – there’s pretty much no club in town we’re not involved with in one way or another. It’s a small community, and we all live here. Whether it’s speedway, races or golf – we’re behind it.
What does your local community mean to you?
It’s where we live. It’s our future.
Who is your favourite local customer & why?
Without a doubt, my best customer is Erica. There’s no ‘if’s’ and ‘but’s’ about it. She’s our best, happiest customer. She’s never once come in grumpy, she’s always happy and everyone loves her.
What does a good Father’s Day look like to you?
It’s a chance to take the girls for a ride on my dad’s Harley.
What do you hope for your children/family?
In the current global climate, I just hope they have a future. That’s pretty scary isn’t it. I wouldn’t limit them. I hope they can do whatever they want to do, and be happy.
Who is the most famous person who has visited your store?
Um… my wife. She’s famous in my eyes. (Angela is sitting across from him.)
What’s your favourite part of the job?
Apparently, I like talking to people.
What is the weirdest thing that has happened to you while working?
Hahaha [chuckles long and hard] we have lots going on in here. There’s never a dull moment. That’s probably the safest thing to say.
