Dating back to the French Revolution, Cointreau has stood the test of time as one of the most iconic and widely used liqueurs in the world. Despite being stocked in 150 countries every year, Cointreau remains one of the few liqueurs to be produced in one single distillery.

Cointreau has developed its unique flavour from three types of oranges from a range of different countries. The types of oranges used are sweet, macerated, and bitter and these oranges are sourced from Spain, Ghana, and Senegal, Brazil and Tunisia.

The man behind the concoction, Edouard Cointreau, originally called it “triple sec,” a reference to the triple concentration of orange flavours in the liqueur, as well as the dryness of the spirit (“sec” meaning “dry” in French). However, with a multitude of triple sec brands on the market these days, the company has stopped marketing Cointreau as triple sec in the hopes of distinguishing itself from products that share this likeness.

  • When Cointreau was invented, it created an entire category of liqueur (triple sec), thus becoming the leader in its field, where it still remains as one of the front-runners to this day.
  • The Cointreau family business began in the 16th century as bakers and confectioners, until Adolphe Cointreau decided to diversify the family business by including liqueurs, starting with Guignolet, a French cherry liqueur.
  • The Cosmopolitan cocktail is essentially a riff on the classic Sidecar. With Cointreau as a star ingredient, the Cosmo swaps vodka for Cognac, and replaces lime juice for lemon. The drink became a sensation in the late ‘90s, when it starred as Carrie Bradshaw’s favorite cocktail in “Sex and the City”.
